Farouk Ramji

Farouk Ramji is the Chief Executive Officer of Mawingu Networks. This is an internet service provider that works to provide affordable internet to rural and peri-urban areas.

Farouk was born in Vancouver and has family roots in Kenya. He holds a double major in Finance and Human Resources from the University of Northern British Columbia.

These studies helped him when he moved into telecom and internet work in East Africa. He has held senior and operational roles in the region before joining Mawingu.

As the CEO at Mawingu, Farouk focused on sharing Wi-Fi and low-cost broadband for small businesses, schools and homes. He built infrastructure to ensure that underserved communities are reached by using business models that make the service affordable.

In 2025, Mawingu made a major milestone by securing Ksh2.6 billion in funding from Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Fund II. This investment is meant to support Mawingu in rolling out more networks in Kenya and to support expansion into other African countries.

He has set an ambitious goal to connect one million Africans by 2028, leveraging a blend of wireless and fibre technology.
